Pregnancy Yoga

Antenatal Yoga classes are run from our cosy Christchurch studio. Classes are small and friendly and no previous experience is needed
Specialized pregnancy hatha yoga classes offer a fantastic way to help prepare for giving birth, and for what follows. It gives you time to relax and connect with your baby while dealing with the physical and mental challenges of pregnancy.
No experience is needed and the course is suitable at any stage of pregnancy. There are a few things we do not do during the sessions such as full inversions, postures that involve lying on the belly and any twists to a closed side (ie compression through abdomen). These will all be explained at the start of the course.
The focus of the class is on developing strength and flexibility in the legs, spine and pelvic floor, opening hips and pelvis, stretching the spine and opening shoulders to help counter the rounding that occurs as a result of the extra weight front side. Opening shoulders also creates more vital space for breathing and can help to prevent compression of nerves.
Classes consist of a warm up, followed by asana practice, breathing exercises and relaxation/meditation.
Courses run for for 10-12 weeks and generally coincide with school terms. Classes run for 1 ¼ hour and cost for a term is $150 (based on a 10 week term).
Yoga can continue throughout pregnancy. ‘Mums and Bubs’ yoga is also available to help recover and connect with your new baby.
"Taking pregnancy yoga with Sanctuary Health provided a gentle and enjoyable way to strengthen my body and ease aches and pains throughout my pregnancy. More importantly it gave me a chance to spend some focused time with my baby. The classes become a special place to relieve stress and anxiety, and prepare myself for birth and motherhood. Now Sid and I attend Mums and Bubs classes, and it is lovely to return to this familiar space. Sid and I both respond well to the quiet, relaxing pace of the class. We can, and have, highly recommend these classes to others."
