Pregnancy Yoga Christchurch - Sanctuary Health

We teach Pregnancy Yoga classes in our cosy Christchurch studio. Classes are small and friendly and no previous experience is needed

Our pregnancy yoga classes offer a fantastic way to help prepare for giving birth, and for what follows. It gives you time to relax and connect with your baby while dealing with the physical and mental challenges of pregnancy.

No experience is needed and the course is suitable at any stage of pregnancy. There are a few things we do not do during the sessions such as full inversions, postures that involve lying on the belly and any twists to a closed side (ie compression through abdomen). These will all be explained at the start of the course.

The focus of the class is on developing strength and flexibility in the legs, spine and pelvic floor, opening hips and pelvis, stretching the spine and opening shoulders to help counter the rounding that occurs as a result of the extra weight front side. Opening shoulders also creates more vital space for breathing and can help to prevent compression of nerves.

We run a general Hatha yoga class which consists of a warm up, followed by asana practice, breathing exercises and end with a relaxation/meditation.

Courses are generally for 10 weeks and coincide with school terms. Classes run for 1 ¼ hour and there is a maximum of seven per class. The cost is $135 for the 10 week course.

Yoga can continue throughout pregnancy. ‘Mums and Bubs’ yoga is also available to help recover and connect with your new baby.
