Acupuncture can help in many cases of infertility for both men and women, depending on the cause. In ancient China, it was very important for the emperor to have an heir so gynecology and obstetrics became an important part of the traditional medicine system. Chinese Medicine places a great deal of importance in preparing for conception/pregnancy and the health of the mother and father to be are of vital importance. Ideally, the couple would have treatment with acupuncture and herbs for sometime before trying to conceive, as well as address any lifestyle factors that might influence conception. These days many people are choosing to have children using Assisted Reproduction Technologies such as IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). This can be costly and stressful and for some people, unnecessary. Often conception is possible using the natural support of acupuncture, herbs and a bit of patience. In recent times much research has gone into the role of acupuncture as an adjunct to ART and IVF. Clinical trials have shown that acupuncture improves the success rate of IVF and the quality of life for patients undergoing IVF so many people now chose to use acupuncture along side.
