Health Cheque

While browsing Stuff.co.nz, I came across an initiative being promoted by entrepreneur, Gareth Morgan. He conducted some research across the health sector, interviewing clinical, administrative and academic staff and collated their opinions about health in NZ. Some simple truths and 'common sense' (an oxymoron if there ever was one!).

One such pertinent observation was that we "need more holistic local contracting particularly for Maori & Pacific. [we also] Need local, holistic, integrated service with a human face for high use/high need patients." this to me means improving community and communication, removing barriers, egos and ulterior motives and concentrating on the best outcome for our collective health.

He also observed the need to do simple, low cost health practices well and not focus on getting the latest fancy-pants-high-budget gizmos. After compiling this research, Morgan asks people to 'sign-up' to values such as "I concur that the budget is limited and should be focused on getting the greatest improvement in our collective health and lifespan/
This is likely to happen if we do simple treatments well, rather than expecting every new-fangled treatment via the public health system."

Preventative health in the form of diet, exercise, moderation of lifestyle etc. is the cheapest, most responsible and most effective way to improve our collective health and the efficiency of the health system in general.

With the specialization of labour in modern industrialized society, has come the revoking of personal responsibility in many areas, and particularly health. The notion that we pay some one to 'fix' us seems a bit strange to me.
