Acupuncture Treatment During Pregnancy

Acupuncture can help many conditions during pregnancy
"I started seeing Dan when we decided to try and conceive our first child. I had been on Depo Provera contraception for 9 years and wasn't ovulating so I wasn't expecting miracles. I had one acupuncture session with Dan and saw a naturopath, and within a month we were pregnant. I continued to see him weekly for the first trimester to help support the pregnancy. I found Dan very accommodating and supportive and I looked forward to my weekly visits. I had food aversions but no morning sickness and the rest of the pregnancy was problem free. We delivered a beautiful healthy 8 pd baby boy with a 7 hour drug free labour and minimal complications."

Acupuncture can help many conditions during pregnancy
Some common pregnancy conditions treated with acupuncture include:
- morning sickness
- back pain
- carpal tunnel syndrome
- swelling and oedema
- turn a breech baby
- pubic symphysis pain
- anxiety
Because acupuncture is a very safe treatment, it is particularly applicable during pregnancy when many other treatment options and drugs are contraindicated. It important to go to a qualified and competent practitioner as some acupuncture techniques are best avoided during pregnancy.
Acupuncture is sometimes used for women who are past their due date or to turn a baby who's breech. Acupuncture is also sometimes used to induce labor and for pain control in pregnancy and to aid postpartum recovery.
Antenatal yoga is also a fantastic way to prepare for giving birth and is a course we offer at Sanctuary Health.
