Acupuncture for Shin Splints (Tibial Stress Syndrome)

Many people with Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints) find that acupuncture helps a great deal in relieving pain.
Shin splints often affects runners, particularly when they increase their mileage or change the terrain they are running on (for example, including more hill running after always running on the flat). 'Shin splint' is a generic used term to indicate pain in the front of the lower leg and can actually be several different things, it is not really a diagnosis in itself. Some examples of conditions that might be described as 'shin splints' are; tibial stress syndromes or tibial periostitis (pain associated with inflammation of the periostium - the covering of the bone).
Of course, it is not just runners who suffer from this condition and many other athletes, dancers and even casual walkers may also experience similar problems.
Treating shin splints with acupuncture can be very effective, especially when it is addressed early on. Other therapies such as physiotherapy can prevent further aggravation by improving the bio-mechanics of running style. Often, getting more appropriate running shoes or even orthotics (e.g. a heel lift) can make a big difference.
